Prayers for our youth and adult sponsors on a mission trip

Thursday: June 25
Please pray for safe travel and that we open ourselves to this experience and to one another. As we cross borders and find our new ‘home’, pray for a spirit of teamwork, of putting each other first, and for peace-fullness in our heart and our new world.

Friday:  June 26
This will be a day of more travel, discovering new places –around us and also within us.  As we begin this day, may we open all of our senses to a new culture.  May we be open to growing spiritually.  As travel, pray for physical endurance, safety, patience and cooperation. As we get to know our new church family and neighbors, may we be culturally sensitive, thoughtful, and kind with the new members of our ‘family’.

Saturday: June 27
As we begin this first work day with prayer and reflection, may our work contribute to both the physical needs of our new community, as well as offer hope and love.   Pray that God will grant us the ability to share our responsibilities, our laughter, our struggles, our discoveries and our lives with each other.

Sunday: June 28
Today we’ll experience a new kind of Sabbath in our new community.  Pray that we let every moment speak to us, and that we listen to God and one another in each experience.

Monday: June 29
As work, play, pray, and serve in this community, we’ll have opportunities to see God’s grace at work in and through others.  Pray that we will be open and receptive.

Tuesday: June 30
This is our last full day in our new home away from home. Pray that we’ll give ourselves fully, and soak up all that is offered.

Wednesday, July 1
Today we say goodbye to our new friends; its hard.  We’ll travel back to Guatemala City with full hearts, changed by our time together in this place.  Pray that we’ll celebrate and honor what we’ve experienced, and that we’ll let our mission continue to transform us.

Thursday, July 2
As we re-enter the world we left behind and as we travel home, pray that we are sensitive to the needs of those around us, knowing how much we have been given. Our mission has only begun! Pray that we will draw on the gifts of this experience and see more clearly what God’s guidance in our lives looks like. May we have the courage to act on it, and may our lives express deep gratitude and abundant love.

About this mission:

We’re serving as guests of a United Methodist ministry called ODIM (Organization for Development of the Indigenous Maya).
Our team will be helping a small group of volunteers and paid local staff working at the grassroots level in the villages of San Juan La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna, and surrounding rural areas on the shores of Lake Atitlan. They’ve been working in these villages since 2005 with the recovery effort after the devastation of Hurricane Stan. Since 2005, the programs have evolved from disaster recovery to emphases on education and health. Through meeting the root causes and necessities of education and health, people in the villages can strive for a positive future for themselves and their children.
