Giving aid to people of Chile
The congregation of UPUMC continues to be generous on behalf of those who suffer. Last weekend's 8.8 earthquake in Chile has affected the lives of so many. Bishop Joel N. Martinez, interim general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries said: "The early reports of great destruction and widespread injuries and the increasing death count point to a need for a full response by all humanitarian agencies and governments in the coming days and weeks." To support relief efforts in Chile, make your gift to UPUMC, and write "Chile" in the memo. Donations can also be made online. We still welcome support for Haiti as well.

Donate during quarterly blood drive
Carter BloodCare will be at the church from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this Sunday, March 7, for our quarterly blood drive. Donations will be taken in rooms 205 and 206. Contact Andrew Hamilton for more information.

Help deliver goods to NDSM
Serving opportunity: grocery delivery to North Dallas Shared Ministries on Tuesday, March 9. We'll meet at the church at 4 p.m. to carpool to NDSM and deliver the groceries our congregation has been collecting. This is a great opportunity for anyone, families and children included, who would like to learn more about one of our ministry "partners" here in Dallas. For questions, contact Rebecca Frank by e-mail or at 214.368.1435.

A Closer Look
Today is Thursday,
March 4, 2010

Be part of God’s amazing work in the western highlands of Guatemala by joining a construction team Aug. 7-14. A $100 deposit by April 4 will hold your place. Balance is $750 if paid by June 15, if after it is $850. Some scholarship support is available. Contact Rebecca Frank. Below, Dr. Terry Latson, a UPUMC member, tells us about his time working with a medical team in Guatemala.

The HELPS group in San Cristobal consisted of about 60 people, with both a medical team and construction team. The construction team installed high-efficiency, vented wood-burning stoves and water filters in the homes. The medical team set up a medical clinic and four operating rooms. In five days, the medical clinic saw over 1,000 patients, and the surgical team performed over 150 operations.

On this trip (my fourth), I worked extensively with a pediatric ophthalmology surgeon from Maryland, providing anesthesia for patients anywhere from 1-year-old to late teens.

Strabismus ("crossed-eyes") is a significant "social stigma" in their society, as well as being a visual handicap. We were able to perform corrective surgery in over 25 children, including eight from one village over a hundred miles away. The smiles on their faces when they look in a mirror and see their "straight eyes" is something you can never forget!

Again and again, I find my own faith "rejuvenated" by the Guatemalan people, who maintain such a strong faith in spite of having so little, and who are so gracious and appreciative of what limited help we can provide.
