Welcome.

United Methodists are very intentionally connectional people. We want to help connect people’s passions with the needs of others. At University Park UMC, we are committed to this, whether it’s connecting people with needs in the neighborhood, or places around the world. We stand by to help you get better acquainted, acclimated - connected - to the calling God has within your life. Your presence is a gift to our church family. My prayer is that our church family will be a gift to you.

Peace and Blessings,
Dr. Keith Boone

God's Actions Among Our Youth: Beth Johnson

God's Actions Among Our Youth: Beth Johnson

Youth Sunday is a tradition that I inherited as the youth minister.

With anything that is inherited, I try and step back and ask why we continue this tradition or practice. Is it working? Is it something that still maintains the spiritual potency of years past? Is it in need of any “renovation”?

After spending some time sitting with these questions, I found this to be true: Youth Sunday is one way to witness God’s actions among our youth. It also takes us a step closer to involving youth in the daily actions and worship practices of the church.

This year, our approach for creating Youth Sunday involved creating 4 connected teams of youth and adults to work together in worship planning. As a holistic youth ministry, we have aimed to better experience Christian community.  So community was an easy choice for our overall worship theme. Working together on a project just like this is a great step in the direction of verdant Christian Community!

Each of the 4 youth teams focused on different aspects of the service planning and creation. Ashley Hall led the youth in understanding the importance of art & icons in the church, which ended up sparking some creativity in our Art Team. Cole Smith, one of our seniors, set out to preach the sermon; met with his fellow youth Message Team who helped him prepare. More teams worked to create the children’s message, prayers, and other liturgical pieces we will experience in worship on April 29th.

We hope that through this process of “learning on the job” we can help youth have a voice in the church because they have so much to offer. Youth are not partial or probationary members; youth are full members, fully human, and should be treated as such. And by carving out this day of worship for them to explore methods and ways of worship as a group, we hope they will hear that wish for their inclusion in our larger church community.

Hopefully, in the future youth are not leaders in worship on one or two Sundays annually…but more often! Join me in praying about and for new ways we can give space to our youth and encourage them to share their witness.
