Welcome.

United Methodists are very intentionally connectional people. We want to help connect people’s passions with the needs of others. At University Park UMC, we are committed to this, whether it’s connecting people with needs in the neighborhood, or places around the world. We stand by to help you get better acquainted, acclimated - connected - to the calling God has within your life. Your presence is a gift to our church family. My prayer is that our church family will be a gift to you.

Peace and Blessings,
Dr. Keith Boone
Senior Pastor

Elizabeth Barlow's 100th Birthday!

Elizabeth Barlow's 100th Birthday!

elizabeth_barlow_01.jpgLet us all join together in a celebration of the 100th birthday of Elizabeth Huster Barlow. It is a time to remember what she has meant to our church and what UPUMC has meant to her. She has been a member of University Park United Methodist Church for 71 years—since 1945!

Elizabeth was born and educated in Fort Worth, and she still wears purple for TCU alumni occasions. She was married to Sam Barlow in 1936 and the couple made their home in Dallas. Their only child, Sam, Jr., was born in 1937; and he now lives with his wife, Lucy, in Richardson. Their son, Bryan, lives in Germany; and their daughter, Lynn, and her husband, Fran, will be moving from Spain with their son, Daniel, to live in Richardson very soon.

In 1945 Sam and Elizabeth joined UPUMC and became members of the Fellowship Class. She was the first woman to be president of that class. She was also president of WSCS and the United Methodist Women. She has belonged to the Fellowship Class, the Mr.& Mrs. Class, and the Wedding Ring Class when class merged. She has always been eager to share her time and talents, and she has been a leader in all the organizations she joined. She has taken very seriously the teaching that we should "let your light so shine."

After Sam died in 1966 she felt an emptiness in her life. The pastor, Rev. Jim Garrett, became aware of this and invited her to become our telephone receptionist. She enjoyed this way of serving the church and was very good at it. She organized others to fill in when she was absent.

Another activity that Elizabeth remembers with great pleasure was the Travel Ministry. One of the pastors described their wanderings as traveling "from coast to coast with the Holy Ghost." For at least twenty-five years they visited many places of religious and/or geographic interest, and Elizabeth did not miss one trip. She took care of the name tags, and Evelyn Herzinger received the phone reservations. Everything was well organized, and she has fond memories of friendships made and deepened during the miles that were covered. Travels were made to England, Ireland, Scotland, the Vatican, Paris, Vancouver, Quebec City, New York City, and many others. Photo albums were filled and shared at a pot luck supper following each of the long trips. The Travel Ministry was a deeply meaningful activity for all who participated.

As time passed her neighborhood changed and friends either moved or died. She felt it was time to move to an independent living community, and she chose The Forum at Park Lane in December 2006. This proved to be a wise decision--excellent food, social activities, available transportation, safety—and only fifteen minutes from UPUMC. She has continued the friendships she already had and added many more. Thanks be to God.
